Lord,
Only You Can Change Me
The
Holy Bible

This book is the reigning bestseller
year after year. It's words of hope have brought new life and healing to billions
upon billions of people. I believe it is the inspired Word of God and thus a perfect
reference manual for all aspects of life. You know, even when you feel that no one
else understands, God does. His Son died. He knows what grief is because He
too has been where you are. I have taken the liberty of listing a few verses that
may help. You can find some of these in the other books listed as well. If you
don't have a Bible, it would be a good investment. Or, you can click on the Bible

"The Lord is close to the
brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Psalm
34:18(NIV)
"But we have this treasure in
jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We
are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed." 2 Corinthians 4:7-9(NIV)
"How I long for the months gone
by, for the days when God watched over me, when his lamp shone upon my head and by his
light I walked through darkness! Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God's
intimate friendship blessed my house, when the Almighty was still with me and my children
were around me, when my path was drenched with cream and the rock poured out for me
streams of olive oil." Job 29:2-6
Mommy,
Please Don't Cry

by Linda DeYmaz
This book is geared to mothers who
have lost infants or young children. It's a beautifully written look at heaven
through a child's eyes. The illustrations by Sabrina Smith are a delight.
While the book brings tears, it also brings comfort and hope. After several
attempts, I was able to read through the book completely. Almost two years later I
still cry when I read it. But that's alright because it helps me keep things in
perspective. Although my Bryan isn't here for me to love, I know he's getting more
love than I could ever imagine in heaven.
This book was given to me by a couple
who, many years prior, had lost their infant son. I love this book and highly
recommend it!

In This Very Hour: Devotions for
Your Time of Need
(Loss of a Loved One)

by Robin Prince Monroe
This superbly written, 31 day
devotional, is perfect for anyone who has lost a child. The author's personal
account is of the loss of her young daughter to a brain hemorrhage resulting from
leukemia. Robin Prince Monroe carefully leads you through scripture that gives
strength and encouragement. She addresses different issues surrounding the grief
process. Her personal experience has allowed her to verbalize exactly how a grieving
parent feels. I personally felt very "normal" after going through the
devotional. One of the biggest questions in dealing with grief is "Does anyone
else feel this way?" The answer you find in this little book is a very loud
"YES!" This book is full of hope and understanding. It will
bring on tears associated with many different emotions but that is all part of the
grieving process.
This book was given to me by a dear
family friend who's teenaged son was killed in a car accident almost four years before my
son died. She even marked some places in the book that really touched her. I
cherish this devotional and recommend it highly!

Streams
in the Desert & Springs in the Valley

by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman
This book contains two devotionals in
one. It has a devotion for every day of the year. What I did when Bryan died
was read everything I could. So, I started reading this devotion starting with the
day I got it. I made notes in the margins of how I felt. And in a few months,
I found that I would forget to read it for a day. Then it turned into two days and
so on. Before I knew it, I wasn't reading it anymore. These devotions are
geared toward the trials in our lives. And now, if something comes up that I'm upset
about, I pick up this book and read that day's devotion. I continue everyday until I
get on the other side. This isn't in the place of a regular study and devotion of
God's Word, it's just an added bonus when you are going through those "deserts"
and "valleys".
This book was given to me by a dear
Aunt who understands what it means to rely on God. I highly recommend this
devotional for every household as a "first aid kit" during the not so great
times in life.

For
Those Who HURT

by Charles R. Swindol
To be honest, I really didn't like
this book in the beginning. When I started reading the "Getting Ready"
section, it made me angry. It spoke about the fact that "We cannot prepare for
a crisis after that crisis occurs. Preparation must take place before
we are nose to nose with the issue." While I agree with that, at the time, I
was in the middle of my "crisis" and those words brought no comfort. Had I
kept reading, I would have discovered the comforting words that I was looking for, but in
anger I threw the book and didn't pick it up again until a week ago (almost two years
after my son's death).
This book provides some insight into
the "why" question that is very valuable if you are having trouble understanding
God. While I don't recommend this book during the early stages of grief, I do
find it helpful for continued healing when you begin to get past the shock and anger of
loosing your child.

Lord,
Only You Can Change Me

by Kay Arthur
This nine week devotional on the
Beatitudes has an emphasis on character. I promise you that God will change your
life through this study if you let Him. It concentrates on everything from Salvation
to becoming "the salt of the earth". Arthur speaks to you as a friend
throughout the book gently instructing in the Word of God.
I highly recommend this study to
