I am afraid my friend is giving up.

At times it may seem that your friend is giving up on healing.  The hard part is determining if your friend is in the "depression" stage of grief or if they are truly "giving up". 

Has your friend considered harming him/herself or anyone else since the loss of his/her child?  Have they become seriously ill as a result of being depressed since the loss of their child?  If you answered "yes" to either of these, your friend probably needs to seek professional help.  Unfortunately, in most cases, you have no way of knowing if the depression is going "too far".  My best advice is to keep a close watch if you feel your friend is contemplating suicide or harm to another.   I'm not going to pretend that I'm an expert on suicide and depression.  For more information on the subject check out the following sites:
